Background:

Sahyadri College is one of the prestigious educational institutions in Malanad region, which, was established in the year 1940 as an intermediate college, in 1956 it was upgraded as a Government First Grade College. Then Dr. K.V.Puttappa the renowned poet of Karnataka and the First recipient of Jnanapeeta Award who was then the Vice-Chancellor of Mysore University urged the Government to rename the college as Sahyadri College. At present the college has been developing steadily in strength and providing of quality education to the needed students.

The college was bifurcated into Sahyadri Science and Sahyadri Arts College in the year 1984, since the strength of the students increased over 3,000. On 2nd June 1992, the Government of Karnataka handed over both the colleges to Kuvempu University as constituent colleges.

 The college library came into existence with inception of the college in the year 1940-41 with a collection of 1790 books, which was located in a classroom. At present the library is housed in a independent building since from 2003. The following respected Librarians worked in this college.

  • The main function of a library is dispensing knowledge to the ignorant and the informed alike. “Vidya-dan” i.e. imparting of knowledge has been considered as the most sacred task in ancient India.
  • The library is the collection and preservation of knowledge for its dissemination to all.
  • To provide pinpointed and up-to-date information to the users for their teaching learning and Research activates.
  • Encourage the reading habit among the newly incumbents by providing orientation programme.

INSTRUMENTATION MAINTENANCE FACILITY (IMF) UNIT

During the10th Plan, the University Grant Commission proposed to establish IMFU in the colleges where Science is being taught with a positive purpose of strengthening the infrastructural facilities already procured. The sizeable pool of the instruments procured during the period of mobilization of infrastructure has to be maintained and protected from the misuse by the negligent staff and ignorant students. The basic necessity of continuation of effective use of the instruments is the target of the UGC.

OBJECTIVES

  • To build up a reserve of man power by providing technical training to the staff of the colleges.
  • Is to provide effective and economical services in the repair and maintenance of scientific instruments and electronic hardware.
  • The IMF shall strive to satisfy the users of instruments and electronic hardware regarding the quality of the service.
  • The IMF shall provide facilities for staff development through training and opportunities to exchange experience with other IMFs and centers providing similar services around the country.

Under the supervision of the organizing committee,headed by Dr.Krishnaswamy the unit began its activities by purchasing the instruments / equipments, tools etc., needed for instrument repair and maintenance. The unit was formally inaugurated by Honorable vice – Chancellor Prof. B.S. Sherigara on 25th August 2007. Then the process of recruitment of technical staff was taken up with the consent of the Kuvempu University. As a result, TWO technicians were appointed to the unit, who reported to the duty on 11-12-2007.The IMF unit in the college is fully functional in effective maintenance of the instruments in the college and is successfully operating

 Duties and responsibilities

1. To carry out repair / service and maintenance activities of electrical, electronic, computer, optical and mechanical instruments / equipments of the college on request from the concerned department.
2. To carry out day – to – day activities of IMF unit.

    • Documentation of daily activities
    • Maintenance of stock register & day book
    • Maintenance of IMF instruments / equipments
    • Attending repair complaints of the various departments
3. Assisting students in project works whenever they need technical help
4. To carry out any work assigned by the Principal of the college

CIL & CUC

Central Instrumentation Laboratory

Excellence in teaching and research by Science Schools need state-of-the-art sophisticated equipments, various workshops and support facilities. These equipments and facilities help the faculty, research scholar and students to carry out globally competitive R & D in basic and applied sciences. Since individual researchers may not be able to generate huge research funds for these research instruments, recently Central Instrumentation Laboratory (CIL) was started under CPE programme in Sahyadri Science College, Shimoga with a mission to enrich the resources on a shared basis for promoting R and D with the following objectives.

  1. To strengthen technological infrastructure to carry out advanced research in various science disciplines under one roof and make their services available to academic departments and schools.
  2. To provide guidance in acquisition of data and train personnel in operation and maintenance of Sophisticated Instruments.
  3. To organize short-term courses/workshops on the use and application of various spectroscopic and analytical techniques for students, teachers and technical personnel from our College and also to others

Common Utility Centre

This facility was established with the financial support from UGC under the CPE scheme. The centre caters to the needs of some routine academic supportive works such as

Currently the centre is operational at IMF centre. In this facility both the students and staff can avail the above facility at a nominal fee.

Boys Hostel

Sahyadri Science College Boys hostel runs under joint Hostel Advisory Committee comprising members from Sahyadri Science and Arts College. The hostel is located in the Sahyadri Science College campus.

The hostel can accommodate up to 150 students of both UG and PG programme in 52 rooms. The hostel is provided with adequate furniture, a separate kitchen and a dining hall.

Girls Hostel

A new girl’s hostel of the Sahyadri Science College has been constructed with the financial assistance of UGC and Kuvempu University and admission are started in the current academic year 2012-13. The hostel is very nearly located to the College premises. Hostel facilities are available to students, few teaching and non-teaching staff members of Sahyadri Science College (PG and UG) and Research scholars as well. Hostel provides spacious accommodation with hygiene food practice. The intake capacity is up to 150.

DEPARTMENT OF SPORTS

"Sound mind in a sound body" is a must to build up a career for a College student. Keeping this in view our College has utilized beautiful land, which spreads into an area of about 86 acres, which provides us an oppertunity to conduct the sports activities amply. Wa have athletic grounds which was prepared scientifically. Along with this basket ball court, volly ball court, foot ball ground, Khokho vourt, kabaddi court, shuttle ball badminton court, hockey ground and cricket ground has been accomodated in this vast land tract. In addition to this we have alos provided table tennis as an indoor game.

Students are involved in sports activities throughout the year and they participate in competitions held in the college, other colleges and in the university as often as they are conducted.
