National Cadet Corps (NCC) :
   


2B/20 Kar. Bn. NCC Company
 

National Cadet Corps was established basing on the recommendations of Khunjru committee in 1948. The aims of NCC were to develop qualities of leadership, character, spirit of sportsmanship and the ideal of service among the students. The service training provided should also enable them to obtain commission to the armed forces. Such disciplined man power should be of use during the national emergency.

Sahyadri College provided NCC training from the year 1953. The NCC unit is now called 2B/20 Company of the 20 Karnataka Battalion NCC. There are 75 SD boys and 20 SD girls undergoing NCC training during the year 2006-07 academic year.

 

Many cadets have brought laurels to the college by participating in various camps, like annual training camp, Basic Leadership courses. National Integration camp, Army attainment camps, Adventure training camps and the Republic Day parade camps Recently during the academic year 2003-04 (SUO K P Raja attended the Republic Day parade Camp and participated in the Rajpath parade march.

Our NCC cadets are also known for their social service. Every year Blood donation camps are organized in collaboration with the Blood bank of Mc.Gann Hospital or with the rotary blood bank. Present NCC A N O is Lt. Mohanesh of the Electronics Department.

National Service Scheme (NSS) :
   

NSS Historic Background

Ever since Independence, there has been growing awareness of the desirability of involving students in National Service. The first education commission in 1950 recommended the introduction of national service by students on a voluntary basis. Subsequently, on the basis of suggestion made by the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, a committee was appointed under the chairmanship of Dr. C D Deshmukh to prepare a scheme for compulsory national service by students prior to admission for degree courses.

 

NSS Symbol & Badge :


The symbol of NSS is based on Rath wheel of Konark Sun Temple of Orissa. These giant wheels of the sun temple portray the cycle of creation, preservation and release and signify the movement in life across the time and space. The NSS symbol is embossed on NSS badge.

Objectives of NSS :

1.  To kindle the students social consciousness.
2.  To give them opportunities to
     (a)  To work with and among the people
     (b)  To develop awareness and knowledge of social realities
     (c)  To have concern for the well being of the community, particularly weaker section
     (d)  To engage themselves in creative and constructive social work
     (e)  To put their scholarship to practical use in mitigating at least some social problems and in promoting
           welfare
     (f)   To gain skills in exercise of democratic leadership
     (g)  To gain skills in the programme of development for self improvement during leisure and vacation period
           of national development
     (h)  To enrich personality
 
NSS :

Sahyadri Science College has contributed to the growth of NSS activities of Mysore University and later Kuvempu University playing a major role. Prof. A.S. Chandrashekar, Former Principal of Sahyadri Science College was a dynamic NSS Officer whose contribution to Adult Education through NSS activities is still remembered. Sri Gowder Shivannanavar, Department of Chemistry has worked as Co-ordinator of NSS wing of Kuvempu University who won the State award for his contribution. The other notable NSS officers were Prof. P T Nagabhushana Reddy, Syed Sanaulla, Prof. Krishna Swamy, Dr. C K Ramesh, Vittal Rao, Dr. Naikar Mallikarjun, and Dr. Ramesh Babu.

Many of our students have participated in the national level. Kum. Geetha attended the State Level camp and Kum. Vinutha Neralahalli attended Republic Day camp at Delhi.
